How to convert PNG to JPG for free
PNG and JPG are the two most common image formats on the web, but they serve different purposes. This guide explains when converting from PNG to JPG makes sense, how much file size you can expect to save, and how to do it for free without uploading your image anywhere.
When to convert PNG to JPG
PNG uses lossless compression — it preserves every pixel exactly. JPG uses lossy compression — it discards some image data to achieve much smaller file sizes. The trade-off is worth it in most cases:
- Photographs: JPG is ideal. The compression is nearly invisible and file sizes are 3–10× smaller than PNG.
- Screenshots with text or UI elements: keep as PNG. JPG compression introduces blurring artifacts around sharp edges and text.
- Images with transparency: keep as PNG. JPG does not support transparent backgrounds.
- Social media photos: JPG is preferred and often required.
How much smaller will the JPG be?
The size reduction depends on the image content and the JPG quality setting:
- A photograph as PNG might be 5 MB — as JPG at 85% quality, it's typically 500–800 KB (6–10× smaller).
- A screenshot might go from 800 KB (PNG) to 200–400 KB (JPG) — a 2–4× reduction.
- Higher quality settings (90–95%) produce minimal visible loss but larger files. 80–85% is the sweet spot for most uses.
