How to merge PDF files on Mac — free and without an app

Need to combine multiple PDFs into one on your Mac? You actually have several options — including one that's built right into macOS. This guide covers all the ways to merge PDFs on Mac for free, including a method that never uploads your files.

Method 1: Use macOS Preview (built-in, completely free)

macOS Preview has had PDF merging built in for years — most Mac users don't know it. Here's how:

  1. Open the first PDF in Preview.
  2. In the menu bar, go to View → Thumbnails to show the sidebar.
  3. Drag the second PDF file from Finder into the sidebar, at the position where you want it inserted.
  4. Repeat for any additional PDFs.
  5. Go to File → Export as PDF to save the merged file.

⚠️ Important: always use File → Export as PDF (not Save) to create a new merged file. Using Save can overwrite your original files.

Method 2: Use TurboConvert (browser-based, any Mac)

If you prefer a drag-and-drop interface, or if the Preview method feels fiddly, TurboConvert's Merge PDF tool works in any browser on any Mac — including older macOS versions:

  1. Go to the Merge PDF tool.
  2. Upload all the PDFs you want to combine.
  3. Drag to reorder them if needed.
  4. Click 'Merge PDF' and download the result.

Your files never leave your browser — everything runs locally using WebAssembly.

Which method is better?

For occasional use with 2–3 files, macOS Preview is quick and requires no browser. For merging many files, reordering pages, or combining documents from different locations, TurboConvert's drag-and-drop interface is easier.
